Teaching Kids Baby Language

Entry photo example

Parents teaching young children words for things that are not real words, this used to really wind me up, but I have learned to relax about it as it is a matter of parents choice.

I do appreciate that you cannot expect very young children to pronounce words perfectly, and that by making words that are easier to pronounce such as 'ta' or 'cheeseon' instead of cheese on toast, kids may be, at least in the short term keen to use them. My problem is however that these words often come from how the child tries to pronounce the real word. Therefore, if the child hears the real word, pronounces their own version, then the parent starts to use the shortened version, the child will be temporarily stumped when it comes to pronounciation.

Do I think that it is a better idea to say 'I don't understand you' or 'that is wrong'? Of course not! The best idea in my opinion is to encourage them to speak with a well done, then 'repeat' what they said properly and clearly. Simple really.
